Congratulations Rosenpass!

Rosenpass—a formally verified, post-quantum secure add-on for WireGuard—has just received a significant new infusion of €269,000 to continue its groundbreaking work in quantum-resistant VPN security during 2024 and 2025 Sovereign Tech Agency. This follows its initial development support under NLnet’s NGI Assure theme fund (Grant No. 957073), which ran from August 2022 through May 2024 as part of the European Commission’s Next Generation Internet programme NLnet.

At its core, Rosenpass performs a post-quantum key exchange alongside WireGuard rather than replacing it, ensuring you retain all of WireGuard’s speed and simplicity while gaining forward secrecy and deniability against quantum-powered adversaries. It implements the Hülsing–Ning–Schwabe–Weber–Zimmermann handshake, augmented with cookies for robust resistance to state-disruption attacks, and uses two post-quantum key-encapsulation mechanisms without relying on signature schemes NLnet.

Why does this matter? As quantum computers advance, many of today’s cryptographic standards become vulnerable—putting everything from online banking to confidential communications at risk. By integrating Rosenpass, organizations and individuals can future-proof their VPN connections, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected even when quantum computers reach practical viability NLnet.

What the Sovereign Tech Fund will support:

  • Enhancing stability and resilience against supply-chain attacks
  • Updating the Rosenpass protocol for sustained, long-term quantum-safe security
  • Improving integration with WireGuard for seamless deployment
  • Strengthening the application against vulnerabilities and elevating code quality
  • Enabling flexible cryptographic options to adapt to future advancements Sovereign Tech Agency
