The EU Green deal is a key initiative of the European Commission. There is no future without a switch in the way we use non-renewable resources. How can data spaces mitigate climate change while creating sustainable growth?
NGI Ambassador Antonio Jara has participated today in the session The EU Green Deal Meets Data Spaces, held at the FIWARE SMART FEST, where he has provided a successful use case highlighting the support of Data Spaces on climate action and sustainability.
Keynote speaker Johan Bodenkamp, EU Programme & Policy Officer from the European Commission (DG CONNECT) opened a session moderated by James George, Strategic Advisor at PYXERA Global. Bodenkamp explained that data and data spaces can contribute to the EU Green Deal initiative, as they have the potential to support the ecological transition to pursue the goals of this scheme. That is why the European Commission is setting up a European Green Deal data space to become a common marketplace for data, algorithms and applications from and for the citizens, institutions and businesses.
Dr. Antonio Jara, NGI ambassador and CEO of HOPU, seasoned the session with a very illustrative use case: the project CO2 Marketplace (Digital Assets for climate change mitigation) in which his company is involved. It is all about an ecosystem that allows to successfully achieve decarbonisation through voluntary compensations.
This allows the enabling of a βvoluntaryβ offset market of CO2 emissions, in which the contextual information across data spaces is actually what allows the creation of tokens to compensate for CO2 footprint [learn more about this initiative here].
Finally, Gaetano Volpe, CEO of Latitudo 40 completed the panel with an interesting approach to green cities through data spaces in specific use cases, such as the analysis of the evolution of urban heat island or the relationship between urban green and the quality of life of citizens.
