Equity Free Funding

NGI stands for the Next Generation Internet. This has already invested €250 million – with more being added. Briefly, it’s a European Commission (EC) initiative that’s shaping the development and evolution of the Internet into an Internet of Trust. Trust is a priority that responds to people’s fundamental need to more fully engage with the opportunities arising from the opportunities of the Internet. Trust is important for self-sovereignty and being in total control of personal digital assets. The NGI is promulgating the eIDAS regulation. It facilitates secure cross-border transactions by establishing a framework for digital identity and authentication. It aims to create trust in electronic interactions and promote seamless digital services in the EU.

NGI also includes security and inclusion whilst reflecting the values and the norms all citizens enjoy in Europe. They have recognised that startups are the source of most innovation. Founders have original ideas or groundbreaking extensions of old ideas. They’ll drive economic growth throughout the region. The European Commission is currently developing third generation of the internet, Web3, with trusted features of openness, decentralisation, and user full empowerment. ,

NGI Is helping by funding a wide range of range of projects across multiple business areas. It’s equity free funding . Awards are generally in the range of €50k to €120k. As you might expect, the qualification procedures are rigorous and there key deliverables to meet.

Each set of projects work to a theme, such as payment systems, digital identity and web search. Each related theme has a few sequntial open calls. One of the aims is sharing results with NGI participants. All projects must contribute to open standards that can be applied throughout the NGI and wider afield. This vibrant community is committed to upgrading the Internet infrastructure for better utility, security and privacy.

Many projects are targeted on improving network performances as well as making the Internet more energy-efficient and sustainable. For example, in the NGI OntoChain project validated Layer1 DLT (Decentralised Ledger Technology) to be one ten millionth of the energy requirements of Ethereum. Mentorship.

Finally, it’s about inter project communication. Plenary meetings cross fertilise ideas to create a stronger digital economy. Convex recently partnered with Werenode whom we digitally met in the NGI Ontochain project.
