NGI-POINTER welcomes 24 Next Generation Internet Architects that will revolutionise internet architecture

NGI-POINTER, an H2020 project that contributes to the human-centric revolution of the internet architecture kicks off its first support programme for 24 Next Generation Internet (NGI) Architects that will bring new protocols, open software, and hardware.

The spread of digital services requires a more efficient, flexible and safe internet, which means there is a need for a new internet architecture. NGI-POINTER will provide the building blocks for a technical revolution of the internet architecture towards a more efficient, scalable, secure, and resilient internet.

As NGI-POINTER is a Research and Innovation Action structured under the NGI initiative, which aims to shape the development and evolution of the internet into an Internet of Humans, it adheres to the values that Europe holds dear to accomplish this purpose: openness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy, cooperation, and protection of data. Therefore, NGI-POINTER also embraces the human-centric technical revolution of internet architecture.

NGI-POINTER supports NGI architects who bear new protocols, open software and hardware intended for internet management in a wide range of cases or challenges related to the internet architecture renovation, such as:

  • Privacy-by-design
  • Internet of Things
  • Network optimization
  • Virtualization and isolation
  • Limitations in the TCP/IP protocol suite
  • eCommerce security
  • Autonomous Network operations and control
  • Energy Efficiency

Between 2020 and 2022, the NGI-POINTER has the mandate to support “internet talents” that will provide new marketable solutions for specific areas related to the internet architecture renovation.

“Internet talents” are researchers from well-known research groups as well as organisations and individuals with outstanding links and track records to internet governance bodies and open source communities that own the renovation problems the internet has today. This is what NG-POINTER calls NGI architects once they are accepted into our support programmes.

After its first Open Call, which closed on 1 June 2020, NGI-Pointer received 159 applications of “internet talents” interested in joining a community of NGI Architects. This considerable figure reflects the fact that nowadays more and more professionals care about improving the internet, explains Mirko Presser, NGI-POINTER Manager and Professor at Aarhus University, in Denmark.

After the evaluation of applications, 24 of those 159 “internet talents” have been invited to join NGI-Pointer as NGI Architects. They kick-off today with the launch of the 12-month NGI Pointer support programme with business and technical mentors. Each project proposed by our NGI Architects will receive up to € 200.000 in equity-free funding.

The projects submitted by our NGI Architects in alphabetic order are the following:

  • CBSDng - Free BSD jail/vm orchestration made easy.
  • DATAHOP - Incentivised content dissemination at the network edge.
  • DREAM - Distributed Replicable Extensible Agency Machine.
  • EDGESec - New architecture for local (edge based) routers.
  • Firmware-lib - European Firmware and app library.
  • Id-xover - Internet-wide identity through realm crossover.
  • IGNNITION - Fast prototyping of complex Graph Neural Networks for network optimisation.
  • KORUZA - Wireless optical communication system for urban environments.
  • Linux-Regtracking - Linux kernel regression tracking.
  • MirageOS - Deploying MirageOS unikernels.
  • MPTCP5G - Multipath TCP for 5G networks.
  • MPTCP - Multipath TCP.
  • Lightmeter - Email infrastructure reinvented
  • Ltt.rs - Open source email client (JMAP).
  • Next - Fully extensible power-browser.
  • Peergos - Decentralised, end-to-end encrypted, and trustless protocol.
  • Reowolf - From low-level internet sockets to high-level programmable connectors.
  • RIM - Receiver-driven Incoming-traffic Management.
  • SCE - Some Congestion Experienced.
  • Scuttlebutt - The Gossip protocol.
  • Solid-Shape - Reshaping linked data on the fly.
  • TA4NGI - Trust and Authentication for Next Generation Internet.
  • VerifiedSCION - Verified secure routing with SCION.
  • WireGuard - Secure VPN tunnel for all major operating systems that use modern cryptography and cutting edge security design.
