The EUDI Wallet will transform online identity verification as we know it

You may have heard of eIDAS 2.0 and the EUDI Wallet lately, which has become somewhat of a buzzword. But what is it?🤔

eIDAS 2.0 is the update to the existing eIDAS regulation, approved by the European Parliament on 28 February 2024. Its mission is to improve the security and reliability of electronic identification and trust services by using a digital identity wallet known as the EUDI Wallet.

This ID wallet is a mobile app that Member States will make available to their citizens, residents, and businesses in 2026 to store digital credentials that can be used to prove their identity and personal information in different services and scenarios across the European Union in a simple and compliant manner.

✨Imagine it as the digital wallets you use for payments on your phone, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, but going one step further, storing credentials like national IDs, passports, diplomas, health records, and more.✨

It is important to note that the EUDI Wallet won't replace the current physical documents, as its use is optional. Instead, it provides a portable and convenient digital version of these documents that is equally valid.

📣 Therefore, organizations must prepare to interact with the EUDI Wallet with solutions like Gataca.

The EUDI Wallet allows you to access a wide range of services and transactions across the European Union, both online and offline, including government services.

This includes applying for public services, opening bank accounts, university applications, proving your identity, storing medical prescriptions, and securing transactions without carrying paper copies of ID documents or dealing with scanned copies🤸

While we wait for it, organizations across Europe are diving into digital identity initiatives to test the EUDI Wallet, such as the NGI eSSIF-Lab program by the NGI Community.
