'The Next Generation Internet: a large-scale ethnography' report

‘The Next Generation Internet: a large-scale ethnography’ report, developed by Edgeryders, summarises and explains NGI Forward main mission: mapping the "big picture" of the technological trajectory of the Internet as an ecosystem. Its objective is to offer (positive) perspectives on it, (normative) considerations on how to make it "human-centric”.
From this study, five main topic areas emerged:

  • The future of work emerged as a central theme both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Data, privacy, and control emerged as a central conversation theme in discussions on the development of smart cities, network technology and surveillance.
  • Big tech, regulation & business models were key discussion topics, centred on the increasing reliance of online business models upon targeted advertising.
  • Crisis, resilience and environmental sustainability from discussions of environmental issues and deep green technology to resilience mechanisms in smart cities.
  • Artificial intelligence, algorithmic inequality and justice on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) discussions.

This report aims to highlight some key findingsfrom an ethnographic perspective and to frame key questions for those interested in building the Next Generation Internet.
