The NGI Search 5th Open Call Results have been Announced!🥳

The NGI Search project, co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, has unveiled the outcomes of its fifth Open Call.

This initiative aims to assist diverse beneficiaries, including researchers, developers, internet activists, hackers, SMEs, and startups, in adopting and developing solutions for data and resource discovery on the Internet.

One hundred twenty-two proposals were submitted for this call, resulting in the selection of seven proposals that have sought financial support. These beneficiaries will receive technical and business support, from Open Source Licensing to Market Readiness.

Meet the selected projects:

✅Make QLever compliant with the SPARQL 1.1 standard.

QLever is a graph database with several unique features. Above all, it is highly efficient and can handle RDF datasets of hundreds of billions of triples on a standard PC. It also shines on smaller datasets, processing queries faster than other engines.

✨QLever is already well-known and used✨

The main roadblock to wider usage is QLever's full compliance with the SPARQL 1.1 standard. This is harder for QLever than other databases because every implemented feature must be correct and meet our efficiency requirements. The goal of this project is to make QLever fully compliant with the SPARQL 1.1 standard while maintaining its extremely high efficiency.

✅Enhanced Geocoder for gvSIG Online: Improving Geospatial Address Search

The project aims to enhance the geocoder of gvSIG Online, a leading open-source web-based spatial data infrastructure solution. By leveraging advanced algorithms, data integration, and enhanced performance, the project aims to improve geospatial address search accuracy, speed, and user experience. The geocoder will be optimised to handle diverse data sources, resolve ambiguous addresses, and provide intelligent suggestions and autocomplete functionality. Additionally, the project will ensure compliance with European standards, specifically the INSPIRE directive for transportation network data.

The enhanced geocoder will empower users to quickly discover and navigate to desired locations, supporting various applications, including geoportals and map viewers🔎

The project aims to create a comprehensive and reliable geocoding solution that meets the user's evolving needs through increased interoperability and seamless integration with other geospatial services.

✅Linked Data Powered Hardware Design Search Ecosystem

The project aims to establish a revolutionary hardware design search ecosystem that leverages the Open Know-How (OKH) standard to vastly improve OSH designs' autonomy, discoverability, and comparability.

✨This initiative will bridge existing OSH directories, enabling seamless search and access to hardware designs for various applications, from humanitarian engineering to commercial development.✨

By standardising metadata and fostering an open and decentralised approach, the project seeks to bridge gaps between isolated hardware communities, enhance data portability, and promote the adoption of OSH best practices. Through LD, they fuse with search engines and other standards.

The project aims to develop the necessary tools and infrastructure to make hardware designs easily searchable—including on mainstream search engines and with AI—ensuring that high-quality, trustworthy hardware designs are accessible and supporting innovation, crisis response, and sustainable development globally.

✅Open Politics

The project's mission is to create groundbreakingly novel open-source tools to retrieve political information and make data- and AI-driven insights into this domain accessible to everyone.💫

The Open Politics web app enables interaction with political data, ranging from geospatial analysis to AI-guided breakdowns of key issues, actors, and interests or retrieval of relevant articles.

Its foundational data engine is unprecedented in what it delivers - production-ready endpoints for information fragments/ articles with query mechanisms tailored explicitly to political analysis (e.g. entities, locations). The data foundation is enhanced by qualitative methods (e.g. AI chains equipped with tools) engineered to make data insights satisfy even complex questions of the political science domain.

✅OSCAR4US

The AR Cloud, Spatial Web, and generally Spatial Computing are foundations for geographically anchored persistent immersive experiences when applied to city scenarios. These can be widely applied in use cases like navigation, gaming, and even municipal planning for citizens, as well as in tasks like maintenance and situated visualisation for city workers.

Spatial computing leverages technologies such as 3D mapping, 6DoF localisation, content discovery, and user-personalised content delivery. Today, these building blocks are mainly provided by proprietary solutions. The Open AR Cloud Association (OARC) develops technologies and standards for open and interoperable spatial computing components on which an ecosystem can flourish. Previously, the OARC created prototype components for an open spatial computing platform (OSCP).

The OARC seeks support to continue the development of the OSCP in 3 directions related to the NGI Search initiatives:

📌Open geospatial visual localisation.
📌Continuous and interoperable discovery of location-based content.
📌 Worldmodel descriptions and updates for 3D spatial and semantic context in search.

✅Ma Dada

Grounded in the French Freedom of Information (FOI) law, Ma Dada's platform guides citizens to file requests and acts as an open data archive and platform for right-to-know or transparency campaigns by publishing the whole process: the request history, the resulting correspondence, and the data obtained through it.

🔥 Launched in October 2019, the site has helped over 1.4K users send over 46K FOI requests to French public authorities. Ma Dada is part of a network of about 30 websites using the same open-source Alaveteli software. 🔥

Ma Dada simplifies the FOI process and makes more information discoverable to the general public. Building on Alaveteli, this project will implement several features aimed primarily at growing the user base and promoting FOI, the platform, and its new features to current and potential users beyond its original niche of expert users by focusing on improving communication and user engagement.

In this round, the platform will introduce technical improvements, such as a one-click request submission template and enhanced request visualization, to further streamline the user experience.

✅FörderFunke

The matching concept behind FörderFunke turns searching conceptually on its head.

A person's profile filters various information spaces and "attracts" relevant things. In the area of eligibility for state benefits, for instance, a user's data points, such as age and income, are automatically compared to requirement files. Each encodes the conditions for a specific benefit.

By doing so, we are eliminating three obstacles to accessing benefits:

📌You don't have to know a benefit exists.
📌You don't have to search for it.
📌You don't have to check your eligibility.

✨Instead, relevant information finds you automatically.✨

The team focuses on state benefits for now, but it wants to expand its scope beyond that. They rely on Open Source, Privacy by Design and Linked Open Data.
