Use Cases for Digital Identity Wallets

Why should you care?

Many of us remember the Cambridge Analytica scandal. They harvested data from millions of Facebook profiles without consent and used it to influence political campaigns. It was a stark reminder of how our personal data can be weaponized.

We get outraged by data breach scandals like this one, yet we freely share vacation pics on social media, click "accept" on cookie policies without a second thought, we keep our phone location active all the time and share it with any app that requests it.

This is what is known as the privacy paradox: the contradiction between claiming we value privacy and our actual online behavior.

As a result of this excessive, careless, personal data oversharing, the Internet has become a playground for cybercriminals. We’re seeing more frequent and sophisticated cyber-attacks, leading to massive data breaches.

The NGI Community and many other similar communities understand the importance of preserving a free, secure, and inclusive internet, and are dedicating their lives towards this goal. In this group fall all professionals working on advancing decentralized digital identity architectures.

We, the decentralized digital identity professionals, often focus our knowledge sharing efforts on the standards, data models, protocols, and other technical specifications and building blocks, while leaving behind the arguments that will actually convince the wider global audience on the importance of their adoption and support, the audience that is primarily driven by convenience, and not by privacy.

As such, we'd like to dedicate this post to explaining some of the most popular use cases for ID Wallets and decentralized digital identity architectures, using the style that could be used to approach this wider audience. Our aim is to help communicate that these decentralized systems not only offer enhanced security and built-in privacy, but also deliver a significantly better user experience compared to current identity architectures:

🔑 User Authentication

Say goodbye to the hassle of remembering countless usernames and passwords. With ID Wallets, just scan a QR code with your phone, consent to share the necessary information stored in it, and voila! You're in. It's like Single Sign-On (SSO) but with top security and privacy.

🪪 Issuance of digital identity documents and other accreditations

Organizations and institutions can directly issue all types of digital credentials to your ID Wallet. These credentials can then be shared by you with third parties as needed, facilitating verification processes and with full control over which information you share, enhancing privacy.

✅ Customer Onboarding (KYC / KYB)

In industries like banking, finance, and healthcare, complying with Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations is crucial. ID Wallets offer you a simpler way to verify identities while meeting regulatory requirements. This means eliminating time spent on long and complex verification processes such as scanning documents or taking selfies.

🛂 Physical Access Control

Whether it's accessing office buildings, hotels, or airports, you can verify your identity seamlessly in seconds. By combining ID Wallets with smart locks or turnstiles, access control becomes automated and hassle-free.

🔞 Age verification

ID Wallets allow you to prove your age for accessing age restricted content without disclosing other personal data. Why share your name and other information when systems only need to know you’re above a particular age, not even your specific age? ID Wallets allow granular consent to share only what’s needed and nothing else.

✍️ Signature of contracts and other documents

Signing contracts and documents becomes effortless with ID Wallets. Your signee information can be automatically filled in, making the process faster and more convenient. Plus, ID Wallets can support qualified electronic signatures, ensuring the validity of your agreements.

🗳️ Electronic voting

ID Wallets can revolutionize the way we conduct voting for corporate decisions, membership voting, opinion surveys, or market research. ID Wallets enable secure and transparent online voting systems. You can securely authenticate yourself and cast your vote without intermediaries, increasing voter turnout and enhancing the integrity of democratic processes.

While these are the most common use cases explored by leading sectors such as governments, higher education, financial institutions, travel, and healthcare, the potential applications are nearly limitless. The benefits are already being tested in real-world production environments.
