WHAT DOES THE CASCADE FUNDING MEAN?

This scheme allows a part of the budget to be set aside by the consortium for third parties, entities that are not part of the consortium, through an Open Call for proposals or as a prize for a contest (inducement prize). Here, “Open” means “open to the public”: any entity fulfilling each call’s rules can apply.

This scheme allows direct support to individual organisations (a research team, a startup, etc.). It does not require a consortium of at least three partners. It is a more agile and dynamic process that can be implemented in small projects with short research cycles, which is better fit to Internet research.

The NGI community relies on groups of experts to select, fund, mentor and coordinate Next Generation Internet projects – it’s their turn to shine! The latest in a series of position papers highlights the Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) – the enablers for NGI projects to get funded in an easier way and move fast to develop ICT innovations.

NGI invests 20 percent of the EC H2020 funding in organising the calls, the selection, monitoring, mentoring and training of project participants, as well as building and growing the NGI community. Through an innovative cascade funding model, the remaining 80 percent is allocated to fund projects.
