Voices from the Streets: How Citizens Imagine the Future of Our Digital Rights

We took to the streets to hear directly from citizens and community members about their hopes, fears, and visions for a human-centered internet that protects our fundamental rights. The result? A powerful 7-minute video that captures the pulse of our digital anxieties and aspirations.

"You are the object being sold"

From concerns about deepfakes destroying careers in minutes to parents unknowingly putting their children at risk online, community members didn't hold back. One participant put it bluntly: "We always think we are the people who can access information... but actually, it's the other way around. You are the object that is being sold."

The conversations revealed a community grappling with the acceleration of AI, the erosion of privacy, and the concentration of power in the hands of tech giants like Meta, Amazon, and Google. Yet alongside these concerns emerged a clear vision for change.

A Call for Digital Rights as Human Rights

Throughout the interviews, one message rings clear: digital rights are human rights. As one community member explained, "Digital rights for me is when human rights go online... people's fundamental rights should be protected."

The solutions proposed were as diverse as the concerns:

• Safe spaces free from trolling, hate speech, and surveillance
• Democratic access to information and tools for collective action

Despite the challenges, hope shines through. Community members envision an internet that is "open, accessible, and truly international", one based on "love, diversity, and transformation" rather than fear and exploitation.
