The Next Generation Internet (NGI) is the European Commission initiative aiming at shaping the development and evolution of the Internet into an Internet of Humans. An Internet that responds to people’s fundamental needs, including trust, security, and inclusion, while reflecting the values and the norms all citizens enjoy in Europe. The NGI comprises an ambitious research and innovation programme with an initial EC investment of more than €250m between 2018 and 2020 and is part of the upcoming Horizon Europe Programme (2021-2027).
Furthermore, to achieve their goal and ensure a lasting impact, in December 2019 the NGI Initiative and the NGI community launched The NGI Ambassadors Programme, a group of individuals and organizations who are experts in different areas of digital technology and represent the values at the core of the human-centric internet such as openness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy, cooperation, and data protection.
The NGI Ambassadors have a relevant online presence and influence with a social media reach of more than 300,000 followers. The Ambassadors have helped attract new players to the NGI community, which to date has almost 2,700 active members and has become a vibrant place to openly ask questions and seek solutions, find information about funding opportunities, partners, events and news.

With the same goal in mind, The NGI Talks were launched in early 2020. A webinar series led by the NGI community ambassadors who sit in conversation with the ecosystem and talk about emerging technologies that happen to be their expertise. A series of digital events with various formats such as panels, round tables, Q&A, exhibitions that have reached over 900 attendees in their 11 sessions so far.
The Programme has currently fourteen ambassadors, all of them committed to spreading the NGI initiative through their areas of expertise such as Cybersecurity, AI, Strategy & Business Models, Product Development, Marketing & Sales, Internationalisation, Finance & Funding, etc. The dynamization of the initiative is done through an array of activities such as webinars, participation in online events, social media participation as well as the NGI community platform.
Following the success of the Ambassadors Programme and under the same NGI goal of shaping a value-centric, human, and inclusive internet for all, a series of events are taking place during the first quarter of 2021. Among them, we can highlight a webinar by Manuela Battaglini held on January 28th, under the topic Social Impact of AI, and the panel on Cybersecurity for a safer Internet on February 3rd, with the participation of Eurid and SIDN experts, and moderated by NGI Ambassador Aljosa Pasic. Next week, the Cibervoluntarios Foundation is bringing us the Best Practices on Digital Transformation with Social Impact and you are still on time to join the session.
The Programme is also committed to equality and diversity in several respects, such as gender, fields of expertise or geographical distribution e.g. currently the Ambassadors come from7 different countries.
